LAB-14 is an ambitious new innovation hub located in part of the former Royal Women’s Hospital to house the Carlton Connect Initiative. The low cost refurbishment designed by NMBW architects is designed to connect a cluster of research groups with industry, government and the local community. FOD was asked to provide a brand that would identify LAB-14 as an autonomous entity, and a low cost signage and graphics system that could be implemented across a broad range of existing surfaces.

A brand language was developed that graphically represented the idea of connectivity, through a modular system built from two graphic elements – a bespoke typeface and an interchanging pattern. By combining the two elements in a varied and dynamic way LAB-14 is represented as a place where things come together creatively.
